Strive Foundation Rwanda remains steadfast in its commitment to advancing reproductive health and rights for all, with a particular focus on Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) and Female Sex Workers (FSWs). In partnership with the Global Fund for Women, SFR has implemented impactful initiatives in Gatsibo and Nyamasheke Districts aimed at improving access to safe abortion services and comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). These efforts have significantly enhanced the availability of essential services while addressing stigma and discrimination surrounding SRHR and safe abortion care.
A critical component of SFR’s work involved organizing advocacy workshops for local leaders and health care providers. These workshops equipped trainees with the knowledge and tools necessary to champion the rights of AGYW and FSWs in their communities. By fostering an enabling environment, local leaders and healthcare providers became instrumental in improving access to essential SRHR services and safe abortion options. These workshops also focused on breaking down harmful social norms and policies that hinder progress in reproductive health and rights.
In addition, SFR prioritized strengthening the capacity of healthcare providers to deliver inclusive, high-quality SRHR services tailored to the unique needs of AGYW and FSWs. Through these targeted capacity-building sessions, healthcare professionals gained the skills and confidence to provide care in a supportive and nonjudgmental manner. These efforts were critical in ensuring that AGYW and FSWs felt safe and respected when accessing services.
To amplify its impact, SFR also launched extensive community engagement campaigns, both online and on ground. The organization developed and distributed educational materials, such as flyers and short videos, to reach a wide audience via social media platforms. These campaigns focused on key issues, including gender-based violence (GBV) prevention, reducing stigma and discrimination around SRHR and safe abortion, and increasing awareness about available healthcare options. Physical campaigns fostered community dialogue and created opportunities for direct engagement. These activities played a crucial role in addressing misconceptions, combating stereotypes, and promoting a more inclusive healthcare environment.

The impact of these initiatives has been profound. AGYW and FSWs in Gatsibo and Nyamasheke Districts reported improved access to essential SRHR services and greater confidence in seeking care. Furthermore, these campaigns increased knowledge of participants on GBV and how to challenge harmful societal attitudes, resulting in a more supportive community and healthcare system. These efforts mark meaningful progress in advancing abortion rights and improving access to care for AGYW and FSWs.
With ongoing support from the Global Fund for Women and other partners, Strive Foundation Rwanda remains committed to driving sustainable gains in reproductive health and rights. By prioritizing inclusivity, education, and empowerment, SFR is paving the way for a future where every individual has the opportunity to access the care and support they need to thrive.
