This was more than just a harvest-it marked a turning point for dozens of women and their families in Huye District.
In Huye District, Southern Province of Rwanda, members of Amahoro Women Cooperative gathered around their fish ponds with pride and excitement. With support from Strive Foundation Rwanda in partnership with the Human Help Network from Germany, they were harvesting the results of months of dedication, learning, and teamwork. What started as a small fish farming initiative has now grown into a reliable source of income, food, and hope.
From Small Beginnings to Real Impact
When the project first began, many of the women had little experience in aquaculture. Today, they are confident fish farmers. Through hands-on training, regular field support, and access to essential inputs, the cooperative has built strong, practical skills in pond management, feeding, and harvesting.
The results speak for themselves. Fish production has increased, quality has improved, and the group is now able to meet growing market demand within and beyond their community.
Improving Lives and Livelihoods
For the women of Amahoro Cooperative, this is more than just farming it is a pathway out of poverty.
Income from fish sales is helping families pay school fees, access healthcare, and put nutritious meals on the table. Children are benefiting from better diets, while households are becoming more financially stable. At the same time, the availability of locally farmed fish is contributing to food security beyond Huye District.
Women Leading Change in Their Communities
One of the most powerful outcomes of this initiative is the confidence it has built among the women. Members are not only earning an income they are making decisions, managing their cooperative, and planning for the future.
They are becoming leaders in their community, showing that when women are given the right tools and opportunities, they can drive meaningful and sustainable development.
Why This Matters
Projects like this demonstrate the long-term impact of investing in women-led initiatives and sustainable agriculture. With the right support, small community groups can grow into strong, self-reliant enterprises that benefit entire communities.
Strive Foundation Rwanda continues to walk alongside Amahoro Women Cooperative and other women cooperatives, ensuring that the progress made is not only maintained but expanded through the women’s economic empowerment.
